Summer 2011
Healing and Hope Through Science has moved to the NC Botanical Garden!  We will continue programming at UNC and Duke Hospitals and hope to expand the program.  We'll be busy writing grants this fall...!

Winter 2011
We are excited to announce that this program will be moving to the NC Botanical Garden at UNC starting this summer!  We will continue programming at UNC and Duke Children's Hospitals and hope to expand programming to more kids and their families.

Fall 2010

We're busy spending the fall exploring and learning and making big (but sanitary) messes!  We've also had some excellent outpatient events with Arts for Life programming as well as our annual pumpkin party.  We're behind on our nature newsletters but are trying to update our blog as often as possible.  Please check it out: healingandhopethroughscience.wordpress.com

Summer 2010
Healing and Hope with Science has its first intern!!! Charles Li, a rising senior at Duke, will be working with the group through the Duke Engage program! He is hard at work making the new Healing and Hope blog site, working with more kids on the pediatric bone marrow unit, and working to write up the Healing and Hope lesson plans! 

 2010

We've started the new year off with several fun inpatient activities and classes- including a new class on habitats and a new activity all about turtles.  We also have a new group of Duke students from the program Science Days who are leading Science Night in the playroom at Duke on Monday evenings.  :)

 We had wonderful outpatient event with special guest Stephanie Bohr from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.  She lead a program about Dinosaurs on Feb 27.  We have several more outpatient family events coming up this spring.
Upcoming outpatient family events are from 4:30-6pm @ Duke Gardens unless otherwise noted.

Our project director, Katie Vogel, was recently named "Tarheel of the Week" by the Raleigh News and Observer.

May 2009

We just completed the third annual Science Fair at Duke Hospital School! Two fantastic scientists presented their projects to admiring fans at the hospital.

 

On May 14 visitors from the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores brought a program to Duke Gardens. And on May 15 they brought critters to UNC Hospital School. It was a wonderful experience for all! :)

Last weekend we held our third annual treasure egg hunt at Duke Gardens on what was possibly the most glorious spring day yet! :)

Our Flower Team and local Florist C. have been having lots of fun making beautiful flower arrangements!

7/7/08 Healing and Hope Through Science is thrilled to announce that we just received funding through The Oak Foundation to help keep us going for three more years! We are still looking for additional funding, but are so incredibly grateful to the Oak Foundation for enabling this program to continue and to grow!

6/1/08 Healing and Hope Through Science went to the UNC Jaycee Burn Center's
Camp Celebrate. We had so much fun making our pillbug (roly poly) circus and catching aquatic invertebrates and small vertebrates in the pond!

The Paperhand Puppet Intervention came to Duke Gardens this week to have a puppet show, parade, and puppet making activity for PBMT outpatient familes. Special thanks to the Chapel Hill Optimist Club for making this event possible!

We had a successful WinterWonderland/Snow celebration for outpatients from the DUKE PBMT program in December, and look forward to having more outpatient gatherings. We're also getting geared up for the Spring '08 Science Fairs!
